In his teens, Professor Mitchell worked as a fireman to put himself through night school and complete high school.

Graduated with Bachelor of Medicine from the University of NSW.

Trained as an ophthalmologist and completed his first doctorate degree, Doctor of Medicine (University of NSW) under the guidance of Professor Fred Hollows.

Completed a Doctor of Philosophy (University of Sydney).

Internationally renowned retinal and epidemiology researcher and clinician with over 1000 peer-review publications. He is on numerous advisory boards and has given many named lectures.

Supervised over 50 post-graduate students and 12 retina fellows.

Consults at Sydney West Retina and Westmead Hospital.

Completed ophthalmic training at Sydney Eye Hospital and fellowships at the Royal United Hospital, Bath and Moorfields Eye Hospital, London, UK.

Consults at Sydney West Retina, Westmead Hospital and Retina Associates; Clinical Senior Lecturer at the University of Sydney.

Volunteer ophthalmic surgeon in cataract surgery camps in India and Fiji.
